Hello from the road! We’re currently somewhere between Cleveland and Chicago, heading to Milwaukee to stay at a friends’ house for the next few days. Satu’s doing a LOT of driving today (and has already done some), so we’re both trying to stay awake and just keep going.
We’ve been in Cleveland for the past two days, documenting the filming locations of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Avengers and visiting the mind-blowingly huge Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame. We also got to meet two of our Gishwhes team members, Kaela and Evie, so it was all very awesome.
This morning, we left the house early to go on a tour at the Ohio State Reformatory, which is the prison familiar to many from IMDB’s #1 movie, The Shawshank Redemption. We were prepared to spend maybe an hour or max two roaming the hallways and looking for the rooms they used in the movie, but ended up spending 3 hours on the premises. The prison is simply that huge. We’ll have to write a full photo report later, but man… what a massive, spooky, fantastic thing to see. A photographer’s dream, really.
Plus, they do ghost tours in there as well. We’re kind of sad AND happy we didn’t manage to attend any of those…
The weather has been hot. Like really, really, really hot. Close to or over 30 degrees celcius humid heat every single day, no matter which city we’ve been in. And if you leave the air con off for just a minute, the car turns into a sauna. We nordics aren’t used to this sort of hotness.
Anyway. Here’s a few photos of our adventures so far. We’ll get back to you with proper full articles and photo sets a bit later!
Boston: A Black Mass filming location just outside the city, where Johnny Depp’s character and his cohorts bury a body. Not a creepy visit at all…
The Cheers pub in Boston… which was actually not the filming location, but inspiration for the series.
The Good Will Hunting bench in Boston. Our guide from On Location Tours said the spot was flooded with flowers and loving messages on Robin Williams’ 2 year anniversary of his death.
Detroit was a positive surprise. Friendliest people ever and filming locations that look like THIS. This one’s from Only Lovers Left Alive, once known as the Michigan Theatre, now a parking lot.
The photographer (Tiia) completely ignoring the magnificent view of the Niagara and concentrating on a tiny black squirrel instead.
In Toronto we stayed with The Grand Hotel & Suites and were spoilt rotten! Here’s one of their hot tubs on the roof. We managed to squeeze in an hour of soaking in the hot water late at night, watching fabulous 80’s music videos on the wall size screen. Flawless!
The Ohio State Reformatory, made famous by the #1 movie on IMDb: The Shawshank Redemption. Incredible! A photographer’s dream.
